CERN: ALICE DAQ & HLT Common Read-Out Receiver Card (C-RORC)


ALICE during LS1, March 2013

At the ALICE Experiment at CERN both Data Acquisition (DAQ) and High-Level Trigger (HLT) use custom built FPGA based Read-Out Receiver Cards (RORCs) to read out the detector data. Both cards provide a PCI-X Interface and two optical links and have been developed as independent projects. These cards transfer the data received from the optical links to the host memory using DMA and perform controlling and preprocessing. As PCI-X as interface to the host machine became obsolete and the cards cannot run the readout at higher link rates, a new common RORC for both HLT and DAQ has been developped. This card is based on a Xilinx Virtex-6 FPGA with 8 lanes PCIe Gen2 and 12 optical links up to 6.6 Gbps per channel

  • PCIe Gen2 x8 with Xilinx PCIe Hard Block
  • 12 optical links using 3 QSFPs attached to the GTX Transceivers
  • 2x DDR3 SO-DIMMs up to 1066 Mbps
  • Configuration management and control even if PCIe link is down

Abstract:

In radiative environments, the accurate operation of SRAM based field programmable hardware cannot be guaranteed. Radiation can alter configuration and state of these devices and thus change their behavior. Common approaches use triple modular redundancy (TMR) in combination with majority voters to compensate radiation induced errors. However, this comes with a large area overhead. This thesis proposes a fault tolerant softcore CPU for FPGAs with reduced area overhead by using double modular redundant logic in combination with continuous FPGA configuration writing (scrubbing). The effectiveness of the applied methods could be verified with both error simulation and particle beam experiments.
